Design and Features

Brother’s range of personal inkjet all-in-ones all look suspiciously similar, but the company manages to differentiate them by careful choice of features and prices. The MFC-J430W sits just above entry-level and is a little more austere than some of its pricier siblings. It still has all the essentials, though, including print, copy, scan and fax.

The top of this all-in-one is only very slightly curved and effectively hides its built-in Automatic document Feeder (ADF). The high-gloss centre panel of the device flips over to reveal a slimline, 20-sheet mechanism, which feeds from the machine’s top surface upwards, so paper ends up on top of the feed stack. This makes it easier to remove scanned pages and it’s no harder to load them.
This MFP has a single paper tray that clatters paper noisily into its belly. It's not the only part that feels a little cheap; the 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) is formed by a panel that flexes, and which needs a firm push at the rear edge to lock it closed when not in use, otherwise it swings open when the lid is raised for access to the scanner platen. The lid's hinges extend upwards to accommodate thick original documents, but it's a wobbly movement rather than a precise one.

Brother has implemented one software feature that's currently unique: The iPrint&Scan app for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7 lets you scan from the MFP directly to your phone or tablet via Wi-Fi. It's pretty cool. Printing over email happens through Google Cloud Print, which has apps for iOS and Android, but not Windows Phone 7. Brother provides both PC and Mac drivers, as well as OCR software (Scansoft Paper Port 12 for Windows and Presto PageManager for the Mac).
Alas, while Brother embraces the Mac, it's less than a bear hug: You'll find no support for even manual two-sided printing. Also, you'll need to download the latest driver from Brother’s website to get around a problem we encountered using version 4.1.4 from our installation CD: The Mac scanner driver would not install automatically. We confirmed that the company solved this problem with driver version 4.1.5. (If you've already installed version 4.1.4, you'll have to download and install the new driver, then delete and re-add the printer, to fix the problem.)

Brother MFC-J430W
The MFC-J430W takes four ink cartridges inserted into a compartment at the front right, with ink fed to the heads via capillary tubes. While this is generally a quiet device, this ink system produces a characteristic high-pitched sucking sound, and the control panel tends to chirp and beep more than most - you can turn audio alerts off, though. The choice of ink cartridges includes Brother's LC1240 range which are good for 600 pages each, giving this MFP reasonable running costs of 7.6p per page overall.  But it will cost more cheap using a refillable long ink tank that might be lose its warranty but it will makes 8000 pages in single set of tanks.

Other Opinions

An excellent printer for small office or home requirements.    It may not have the speed of higher priced models,  . Print quality is very good. Setup was a breeze and connected immediately with my network. As in all lower priced items some desired features are not available, like duplex printing which saves paper. But I use a work around procedure. Included software like Paperport is helpful in organizing documents. Considering all, I'm extremely content with this purchase.

I have but the highest regard for this product. The wireless feature, operated from my laptop and my desktop is very convenient. My laptop is located four rooms away from this printer with no degradation. The monitor display of individual ink level colors is a good feature.
Customer tech support is very responsive. When I had a question on the procedure of getting a scanned document to my desktop.

Setting up my home office I needed something lightweight, portable, easy to operate and relatively inexpensive. My Brother Inkjet machine has now been at my side for 2 months and was one of the best investments I've made. Most printing is done wirelessly and the quick response and very good print quality is what I was after. Great printer for Real Estate Home Office.

I bought this printer about a month ago. At first, I wasn't sure what to buy. I got a recommendation from the guys at an ink refiller franchise. They told me about my previous printer that I have now replaced, and back then it was a good deal. They endorsed this Brother printer. On the strength of that endorsement, I went out and bought this printer, and I have had time to put it through the paces. I am pleased to announce that this product met and surpassed my expectations. I am very happy with this printer, and if anybody out there needs to have their own personal printer for their computer system, do get this one - you won't be disappointed!
